Educational Self-guided Tour Explains Cows from A to Z

Cows are amazing creatures! …extremely curious and inquisitive animals which will investigate everything.

dairy-view-cowsThey have almost 360° panoramic vision which allows them to spot a potential predator coming at them from almost any direction. You can learn all about cows from the inside out on the Dairy View Self-guided Tour.

You might have heard it said that cows have four stomachs…

They actually have only one stomach, but it is divided into four compartments or chambers: the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. This allows cows and other grazing animals to digest grain and grasses most effectively. You can see a model of a cow’s stomach compared in size to a human’s stomach in the Dairy View Self-guided Tour.

Cattle have an excellent sense of smell. They can detect odours up to five miles away. Cows can also hear both low and high frequency sounds beyond human capability.

“Just as people respond better to the personal touch, cows also feel happier and more relaxed if they are given a bit more one-to-one attention.” explains Dr Catherine Douglas, who works in the School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.

In the Dairy View Self-guided Tour, you can try milking Cookie, our mechanical mascot to see what it was like to be a farmer in the good old days. You can also watch our real cows as they get milked in the modern milking parlor behind a wall of windows.

Made here on the farm, our Dairy View brand ice cream is available in bulk or by the scoop in over 30 different flavors.

We use our own fresh-from-the-cow dairy products to create this delicious specialty right here in the Dairy View production kitchen, adjacent to the ice cream parlor. Like all of our working facilities, you can watch the process of ice cream making from behind glass as you sample the end results.

We invite you to relax in the Dairy View Country Store Ice Cream Parlor where you can choose from at least 8 different flavors of fresh ice cream featured in rotation – including seasonal featured varieties among our traditional standard flavors – vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan, caramel cashew and blue moon.
